The people behind the bibs.
Melinda Collins ran the full marathon, and she was exactly the sort of person we wanted to support.
Melinda is a volunteer coach with The Speed Freaks, a Christchurch organisation helping people through addiction recovery with running and movement.
She talks about showing people what they are capable of. About helping others find confidence. That landed with us immediately. Because confidence changes everything.
We see that every day. People often arrive feeling uncertain. They are trying to work out if they are ready to buy, invest, or make a move. Then something shifts. They get clear. They trust themselves. They realise they are capable of more than they thought.
Libby Gibbins is another runner we are proud to back. Libby is a mum of two, training for a full marathon while juggling work, family, tired legs, and the general madness that comes with small kids.
She has been sharing the process honestly online – the reality of fitting a big goal around everyday life.
Which feels very familiar. Property works like that too. You do not wake up one day with the life you want. You build it. One good decision at a time. One move forward. Then another.
Christchurch hosted its annual marathon on Sunday 12 April.
Early on a slightly dreary morning (yet, arguably perfect running conditions), more than 8,500 people showed up at the start line to tackle the 10km, the half marathon, or the full 42.2km.
That is a lot of people choosing to do something hard.
We love that.
Four Avenues has always loved movement. The move you have been thinking about for ages. The one that takes a bit of courage. The one that changes your future.
“Made to Move You” sits behind everything we do. We build homes that move people into ownership, confidence, freedom, and a bigger life. The marathon felt like a pretty perfect expression of that. Thousands of people standing on a start line. Backing themselves.
Which is why we sponsored several runners in this year’s Christchurch Marathon
Rodrigo Balcazar ran for his dad, who passed away earlier this year. His dad loved marathons and always wanted Rodrigo to run one himself.
This year, he did it. We love that!
James Harrington had his own battle out there. He set out to run the 42.2km in 3 hours 10. By the 30km mark, the cramps had kicked in and things got hard. Proper hard.
He could have packed it in. Instead, he kept moving. James crossed the line in 3 hours 19. A new personal best. Two hours quicker than his last marathon.
Not the perfect race. Not everything going to plan. But a gutsy decision to dig deep when things got uncomfortable and keep going anyway. How epic.
Don’t stand at the start line forever.
A marathon is a funny thing. Nobody ever feels completely ready.
You stand at the start line wondering if you have trained enough. If you should have waited. If next year might feel easier.
Then the gun goes. And suddenly you are moving.
The world feels a bit uncertain right now. Headlines. Global tension. Markets moving around. Plenty of reasons to sit back and wait for things to feel calmer.
A lot of people do exactly that. They wait for the “perfect” moment. The “perfect” interest rate. The “perfect” feeling.
It never arrives.
The people who make the best moves are usually the ones prepared to back themselves while everyone else is still hesitating.
Robert Kiyosaki once said, “The problem with waiting until the market is ‘safe’ is that by the time it feels safe, the opportunity is gone.” He is right. By the time everything feels comfortable again, the best opportunities have usually already gone.
Markets like this reward people who can stay calm and think long term. Warren Buffett built an empire doing exactly that: “Be fearful when others are greedy and greedy when others are fearful.”
Markets like this create opportunity. Buyers have more time to think. There is less competition. Banks are keen to lend.
Christchurch is a great place to invest because the fundamentals are strong. People want to live here. People want to rent here. The city is continuing to grow.
Property has always rewarded people who move early and think long term. The people who bought in Christchurch ten years ago probably wish they had bought two. We reckon the same will be true ten years from now.
You don’t need to rush. BUT, you do need to stop waiting for every light to turn green.
Instead, ask the questions. Run the numbers. Have the conversation. Then – back yourself.
Life gets better when you move.
That is what our runners did. That is what Christchurch is doing. And that is what we want for every Kiwi we work with.
A move that feels smart. A move that feels right. A move that moves you.
